I use abstract mathematics as the compositional framework to paradoxically create “realist” artwork about history, representation, social justice, and the great artists with whom I wrestle.
"Making Irrational, Rational" at Alcatraz from July 2016 to February 2017. Incorporating prison vernacular, "Football numbers" (slang for long prison sentences), and math the piece challenges the viewer to address whether irrationally long sentences for minor offenses are justified and should they be shortened to make them more rational. This was done by shortening the irrational number PI which is a way to make the resulting number rational. The jerseys were "hung out to dry" on hemp rope (an apt description of what society does to these people and their families.) click here for more pictures
This work combines Donald Judd, Monet, Kandinsky, and a stack (from algebraic geometry, that partially arose from questions of representability in math) to address representation and abstract art.
What is Left combines a range of related mathematical ideas and English history to address Henry 5th, the 100 years war and the subsequent War of the Roses. The mathematics includes left exactness, mathematical arrows, injective objects, Čech cohomology, and the Cousin problems.
